Definition

A laboratory authorised by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to conduct official CWC verification analysis. Must pass biennial proficiency tests on Schedule 1, 2, and 3 chemicals in complex matrices. The network includes approximately 20 laboratories globally, including DSTL (UK), ECBC (US), DRDE (India), FOI (Sweden), and Spiez Laboratory (Switzerland).

They analyse samples collected during Chemical Weapons Convention inspections and incident investigations. The labs use a standardised toolkit of instruments (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and phosphorus NMR) to detect and identify chemical warfare agents, including Schedule 1, 2, and 3 compounds in complex sample matrices.

How do you know an OPCW lab meets the standard?+

Every designated laboratory must pass blind proficiency tests every two years. These tests verify the lab can correctly identify chemical agents in unknown samples using the OPCW analytical suite. If a lab fails, it loses its designation.

Which countries run OPCW Designated Laboratories?+

About 20 laboratories operate globally. Examples include DSTL in the UK, ECBC in the US, DRDE in India, FOI in Sweden, and the Spiez Laboratory in Switzerland. All must be certified by the OPCW Technical Secretariat to participate in verification work.
