What exactly is natural variation in handwriting?+
Natural variation is the normal, legitimate differences between genuine executions of the same writing by one person. A person doesn't sign or write the same letter identically every time, yet the variations stay within their own established range. An examiner's job is to figure out whether questioned-writing differences fall within that writer's known range, not whether every letter matches exactly.
How do examiners know what range of variation to expect?+
They look at multiple exemplars (sample writings) from the same writer, examining how much that writer actually varies their letters and features across repetitions. The more repetitions, the clearer the picture of their natural range. This is why questioned-document examiners always request multiple samples from the same task.
Does signature style affect how much variation is normal?+
Yes. Someone who signs quickly and casually tends to have wider, broader variation in their signature. Someone who signs deliberately and formally tends to produce a narrower, more controlled range. Understanding whether the writer is a casual or formal signer helps the examiner set realistic expectations.
