Muzzle Imprint
Definition
A patterned contusion or abrasion left on skin by the muzzle face of the weapon in hard-contact wounds. In revolvers, the cylinder-face gap may produce a secondary imprint. Documents the muzzle geometry and is diagnostic of contact-range firing.

Common questions
Why does a revolver sometimes leave two separate imprint marks?+
The cylinder sits forward of the frame with a small gap between the cylinder face and the barrel forcing cone, and propellant gas escapes through this gap under hard contact. That escaping gas can stamp a second, fainter mark on the skin alongside the muzzle imprint itself, a pattern semi-automatic pistols do not produce.
Does the absence of a muzzle imprint rule out a contact wound?+
No. A muzzle imprint forms most reliably over a firm tissue bed such as bone, where skin is compressed against the weapon. Over soft, mobile tissue the same hard-contact shot may leave little or no patterned bruising, so its absence is not proof the muzzle was held away from the body.
How does an examiner match an imprint to a specific weapon?+
The imprint's outline, any sight or barrel-shroud impression, and (for revolvers) the secondary cylinder-gap mark are compared against the muzzle-end profile of the suspect weapon, sometimes with test imprints on skin-simulant material to confirm the geometry lines up.
