Model Fingerprint

Definition

An unintentional pattern in a generative model's outputs that is characteristic of that model's architecture, training data, or sampling procedure. Unlike watermarks, fingerprints are passive traces. They can be identified by training a classifier on confirmed outputs from each model and then applying it to unknown samples.

Nature
Unintentional, passive artefact of a generative model
Distinguished from
Watermark, which is intentionally embedded
Detection method
Classifier trained on confirmed model outputs
Use case
Attributing synthetic media to a source model

Common questions

Why can't a model fingerprint be simply removed the way a watermark can be stripped?+

Because the fingerprint arises from the model's architecture and training process rather than an added signal, it is embedded throughout the statistical structure of the output, making targeted removal far harder than deleting an inserted watermark.

How reliable is model-fingerprint attribution in practice?+

Reliability depends heavily on the classifier's training data covering the model in question, and it can degrade against post-processing such as recompression, resizing, or mixing outputs from multiple models.
