MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty)
Definition
A bilateral or multilateral treaty framework through which countries agree to provide legal cooperation in criminal investigations, including compelling disclosure of evidence held in the receiving country. MLAT requests typically require dual criminality (the conduct must be an offence in both countries) and take weeks to months to complete.
