Makernote
Definition
A proprietary EXIF sub-block written by the camera manufacturer to record device-specific data not covered by the EXIF standard. Canon, Nikon, Sony, and other makers use different MakerNote structures. An absent, truncated, or out-of-format MakerNote is a strong indicator of editing-tool interference.

Common questions
Why is a missing or malformed MakerNote treated as suspicious rather than definitive proof of editing?+
Many image editors and social media platforms strip or alter metadata during normal processing, including MakerNote data, even when the image content itself is untouched. Its absence is a useful flag prompting closer examination, but on its own it does not prove the pixel content was manipulated.
Why can't MakerNote data be interpreted the same way across different camera brands?+
Because the format is proprietary and undocumented by each manufacturer, decoding tools rely on reverse-engineered field maps that differ by brand and sometimes by camera model. A structure that looks anomalous for one manufacturer's format may be entirely normal for another's.
