Individual vs Device-Class Attribution
Definition
Individual attribution identifies one specific camera body. Device-class attribution identifies only the make or model. PRNU provides individual attribution; metadata and lens-distortion methods typically provide only class attribution.

- Individual attribution
- One specific camera body, via PRNU
- Class attribution
- Make or model only, via metadata or lens distortion
Common questions
Why can metadata alone not achieve individual camera attribution?+
EXIF metadata typically records the camera make and model set by the manufacturer's firmware, not a serial-level fingerprint, and it can also be stripped or edited, so at best it narrows the field to a device class rather than one physical unit.
When is class attribution sufficient for an investigation even though it is less specific?+
If the goal is only to confirm an image was consistent with having come from a particular type of device, such as a specific phone model reportedly used by a suspect, class attribution can corroborate that claim without needing to prove which individual unit took the photo.
