Definition

Surface features on a fired bullet or cartridge case that arise from random or unique events (tool wear, corrosion, service damage) and which, unlike class characteristics, are not shared by other specimens from the same manufacturing batch.

Individual characteristics are features of a physical item that are unique to that one item and no other. They arise from random variation during manufacturing, or from wear, damage, and use over time. Because they cannot be predicted or duplicated, they allow an examiner to conclude that a mark or trace came from one specific source.

How are individual characteristics different from class characteristics?+

Class characteristics are shared by every item made the same way, like the caliber of a bullet or the blade width of a screwdriver. Individual characteristics go a step further. They are the random, near-unique details, such as microscopic striations on a barrel or ridge minutiae in a fingerprint, that distinguish one particular item from all others of the same class.

What kinds of evidence carry individual characteristics?+

Several types of physical evidence can carry individual characteristics. Fired bullets and cartridge cases pick up microscopic striations from a gun's rifling and breech face. Tool marks in soft materials reflect the unique surface texture of the specific tool used. Fingerprint ridge detail, DNA profiles, and fracture patterns are other well-known examples where individual characteristics support source attribution.
