What is the line between permitted image enhancement and improper manipulation?+
Enhancement adjusts existing data, such as contrast, brightness, or sharpening, to make features already captured more visible, without adding, removing, or fabricating content. Manipulation crosses into altering what the image actually shows, which is why guidelines require every enhancement step to be documented and applied only to a working copy, never the original.
Why must enhancement be performed on a copy rather than the original file?+
Preserving the original, untouched file lets another examiner or the defence independently verify what was actually captured and reproduce the enhancement steps. If the original itself were altered, there would be no unmodified baseline left to check the enhancement against.
