Definition
Keystroke analysis applied to arbitrary typed content rather than a fixed password or passphrase. Forensically more relevant than fixed-text verification but substantially harder, with EERs typically 10-20 per cent for individual classifiers.

Why is free-text keystroke dynamics harder than fixed-text verification?+
Fixed-text systems compare typing rhythm on an identical string every time, controlling for content. Free-text systems must extract a stable behavioural signature across arbitrarily different words and sentences, where digraph and trigraph timings vary with vocabulary, mood, and typing surface, which pushes error rates higher.
Where is free-text keystroke dynamics actually applied in casework?+
It is most useful in continuous authentication and insider-threat monitoring, where a user types naturally during normal work, and in some authorship-adjacent contexts such as detecting account takeover mid-session, rather than as a one-shot login gate.
