False Positive Identification Rate (FPIR)
Definition
In 1:N identification, the rate at which a probe image of an individual not in the gallery generates a top-rank match. Critical in large-gallery searches where even low per-pair error rates compound to significant absolute numbers.

Why is FPIR reported separately from FMR in identification systems?+
FMR describes a single pairwise comparison, but a 1:N search runs one probe against an entire gallery and returns only the top candidate or a short candidate list. FPIR captures that search-level outcome, which behaves differently as gallery size grows even when the underlying pairwise FMR stays constant.
How do investigators guard against acting on an FPIR-driven false lead?+
Facial recognition candidate lists are treated as investigative leads, not identifications; agencies pair an algorithmic match with independent corroboration and, where used evidentially, human examiner review before any action is taken on a candidate.
