Definition
The standard procedure for obtaining handwriting exemplars from a suspect without allowing them to see the questioned document first, to prevent stylistic tailoring of the exemplar toward or away from the questioned writing.

Common questions
Why would a suspect alter their writing if shown the questioned document first?+
A guilty suspect might deliberately write differently to avoid matching the questioned writing, or an innocent suspect nervous about the accusation might unconsciously mimic it, either of which distorts the comparison's validity.
How does the protocol control for this risk in practice?+
The examiner dictates text rather than showing the questioned document, often repeating the dictation over multiple sessions and interspersing unrelated material, so the suspect cannot consciously shape their writing toward or away from a known target.
