Electrolytic Etching
Definition
Electrochemical alternative to chemical etchants. The part is the anode in an electrolyte bath; controlled current selectively dissolves the strained metal at a faster rate than the surrounding undeformed metal.

How does electrolytic etching restore erased serial numbers?+
The part is placed as the anode (positive electrode) in a dilute acid or salt solution. A controlled electric current dissolves the strained, deformed metal at the serial number location much faster than the surrounding unstrained metal. This reveals the original number that was erased.
When is electrolytic etching better than chemical etchants?+
Electrolytic etching offers finer spatial control and works well on surfaces that are corroded or heat-treated, where chemical swab methods may not penetrate evenly. The electrochemical process is more precise and adjustable.
Why does the current target deformed metal faster?+
The metal that was mechanically deformed during stamping or engraving has internal stress and crystal damage. These strained areas dissolve preferentially under the applied current, making the serial number stand out clearly against the undeformed surrounding metal.
