Dermal Papillae
Definition
Peg-like projections of the dermis into the epidermis. Their geometry sets the ridge pattern in stone before birth. Damage limited to the epidermis heals without scar; damage into the dermis leaves a permanent scar that becomes part of the print.

Common questions
Why does the depth of an injury to the finger determine whether a print permanently changes?+
The ridge pattern is templated by the dermal papillae layer, not the surface skin. A cut or burn confined to the epidermis regrows following the same underlying papillae template, restoring the original ridge detail, while an injury that damages the dermis destroys the template itself, so the healed area shows scar tissue instead of ridge detail from then on.
Does this mean a scarred fingerprint area is useless for identification?+
No, a permanent scar is itself a highly individual feature. Once documented on file, its size, shape, and position become an additional identifying characteristic that examiners can use in later comparisons.
