Density

Definition

Mass per unit volume (ρ = m/V), expressed in g/cm³ or kg/m³; a physical property used to compare and discriminate glass, mineral, polymer and liquid trace-evidence samples.

Formula
ρ = m/V
Common units
g/cm³ (solids/liquids), kg/m³ (SI)
Typical use
Glass, mineral, polymer and fibre comparison
Common method
Density gradient column or float-sink
Evidence type
Class characteristic, not individualising

Common questions

Can density alone identify a source of glass or fibre?+

No. Density is a class characteristic: many different sources share the same value or an overlapping range. A density match narrows the pool of possible sources but must be combined with refractive index, elemental composition, or other tests before any source-level conclusion is drawn.

Why does temperature matter when reporting a density result?+

Volume changes with temperature, so density measurements are only comparable when both the questioned and reference samples are measured at the same, controlled temperature. Lab protocols specify a fixed measurement temperature to keep comparisons valid.
