Common questions
Does a missing Content Credentials badge prove an image was manipulated?+
No. The badge only appears when the creation tool supports C2PA and the manifest was preserved through every stage of editing and distribution, so a great many authentic, unedited images will simply never carry one because the capturing device or platform never attached a manifest in the first place.
Can a Content Credentials manifest be stripped or forged?+
The manifest can be stripped by re-saving or converting the file through software that does not preserve it, which removes the badge entirely rather than leaving a false one. Because the manifest is cryptographically signed, altering its content without invalidating the signature is intended to be infeasible, though examiners still verify the signature rather than trusting the badge display alone.
