Why is a colposcope's magnification important in a sexual assault examination?+
Many injuries relevant to a forensic exam are subtle, such as small tears or abrasions, and are not reliably visible to the naked eye, so the magnification and bright coaxial lighting let the examiner see and photograph findings that would otherwise be missed or under-documented.
Does absence of visible injury on colposcopy mean an assault did not occur?+
No. Genital tissue heals quickly and many sexual assaults, including penetrative ones, leave no visible injury, so a normal colposcopic exam is not evidence that an assault did not happen and should not be interpreted that way in court.
