Definition
The preliminary question: is the note what it claims to be (an external demand by an unknown party) or is it fabricated? Authenticity analysis precedes authorship attribution and is often more important in case resolution.

Why is authenticity examined before authorship attribution?+
If a note is fabricated by someone with legitimate access to the household or victim, such as a family member staging an outside threat, the whole authorship question changes to a much smaller, known pool of writers.
What kinds of clues suggest a note is staged rather than genuine?+
Investigators look for inconsistencies with the practical logistics of the claimed demand, staging inconsistent with the rest of the crime scene, and phrasing that echoes the household's own language rather than an outsider's.
