Definition
A report made to law enforcement that discloses certain facts about an assault (location, weapon, method) without identifying the patient. It triggers a law-enforcement response without committing the patient to a formal complaint.

Jurisdiction and protocol dependent, but many programmes preserve forensic evidence collected under an anonymous or Jane Doe kit for a set retention period, so it can be linked to a later named complaint if the patient decides to proceed.
