Amelogenin

A gene on both the X and Y chromosomes used for sex determination in forensic STR kits. The X-allele amplicon is approximately 6 bp smaller than the Y-allele amplicon, producing two peaks in males and one in females. Mutations in the X amelogenin primer site can cause apparent sex-typing failures; this is documented at a population frequency of approximately 1 in 900 males.
