Cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV)

The terminal electron acceptor in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, inhibited by both cyanide and hydrogen sulphide. Inhibition prevents oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production, producing cellular asphyxia even when haemoglobin is fully oxygenated.
