The Institute of Forensic Science at the University of Mumbai is one of the oldest dedicated forensic teaching units in western India. The institute was set up in the 1970s and has run continuously since, attached to the University of Mumbai and located at the university''s Vidyanagari campus.
Mumbai''s position as a financial capital, a major port, and a dense urban centre means the city''s forensic case-load draws from a wide spectrum: financial fraud, organised crime, cyber offences, narcotic seizures at the port, and the standard mix of biological and chemical casework. Students at IFS Mumbai sit close to that ecosystem, and many of the institute''s alumni have gone on to senior positions in the Maharashtra state forensic services and in private investigations.
Why it matters for students: For students whose interest is firmly in laboratory-side forensic science with strong wet-lab and instrumental exposure, IFS Mumbai offers a focused PG programme without the larger university overhead. The cohort is small and faculty are specialists, which suits students who want to specialise early.
