Definition
Burning that occurred at or very close to the time of death, while green (fresh) bone still contains its organic matrix. Distinguished by characteristic longitudinal splitting and organic-matrix crazing absent in post-mortem burns.

Green bone under fire tends to split lengthwise and warp because it still holds moisture and organic collagen, while already-dry, post-mortem bone tends to fragment into smaller, more irregular, checkerboard-like pieces without the same splitting.

Can peri-mortem burning features survive a very intense, prolonged fire?+
